Las picadas de insectos pueden ser dolorosas y, algunas veces, mortales. La mayoría de las picadas no requieren atención médica, pero una reacción alérgica por la picada puede ser una situación de emergencia. Si la picada es producida por una abeja, hay que extraer el aguijón. No se deben usar pinzas para retirar el aguijón, ya que ocasionaría que se libere más veneno. Se debe aplicar una compresa fría para reducir la inflamación. En las próximas 24 a 48 horas se debe observar el lugar de la picada para ver si no hay rastros de infección, como aumento del enrojecimiento, dolor o inflamación.
